Techny Arborvitae is an evergreen shrub that is commonly planted in lawns as a hedge. Techny Arborvitae grows in a pyramid form and can reach about 15 feet tall and 6 feet wide. When planting a hedge, keep in mind the growing habits of this evergreen. Techny Arborvitae should be planted about every 6 feet depending on how dense you want your hedge. You should plant your hedge so that when it is mature, the plants are touching but not growing together. If you plant your arborvitae too close together, it will restrict growth on the surrounding plants. If one plant dies, you will have bare areas on the surrounding plants. The bare areas will not fill in. Installing a new plant will take time for it to fill in the areas.
Techny Arborvitae does best in full sun exposure. This evergreen requires frequent watering during extreme heat and drought conditions. The one downfall of this evergreen is that deer love to feast on it. If you are considering installing this evergreen, be prepared to treat it with a deer repellent. Deer damage can be quite destructive, and the evergreen will not likely recover. If planted in the right application, deer may not pose a threat to this plant.
